How well do aviation counter-measure flares work?
because in the movie “Behind Enemy Lines” the SAM fired at their Hornet is not deterred by the flares and I was wondering if that was do to how the SAM locks on or if the it was Hollywood or what?
It varies. Modern combat is central around technology. You develop good missile guidance system that can avoid countermeasures. They develop better countermeasures and better guidance to avoid YOUR countermeasure. So you develop your countermeasures and missiles… ad infinitum.
But I digress. Counter measure flares work generally well against most modern munition systems, especially if the lock-on is a tad shaky. Combined with emergency evasive maneuvers, and pilots can generally avoid incoming missiles.
As a general note, don’t take any science lessons from Hollywood. Ever. Seriously, just put up a mental block in your head. Now. I’m not kidding.
